A Brief History of Theatre New Mexico
(formerly New Mexico Theatre Association) has been serving as an advocacy group for the arts since the 1970’s. It is a member of
Southwest Theatre and Film Association
and the
American Association of Community Theatre, and through these groups, has participated in the AACT/FEST.
(See “Handbook of AACT/FEST”)
State winners of Theatre New Mexico have advanced as far as the international level; i.e. Los Alamos Little Theatre performed in
Scotland in 1989. The state festival / conference is held in a different member location every year, thus allowing the diverse community
theatre groups to “strut their stuff.”
Workshops have been as diverse as the groups themselves, calling on people from all facets of the arts.
Examples include workshops on acting and auditioning conducted by two faculty members of the American Academy of Performing Arts in Los Angeles.
We’ve had workshops on everything from “Creating with Styrofoam” to “Who’ll Sweep the Floor?” -
dealing with community theatre management, with lots of others
