WHERE WE'VE BEEN, WHERE WE ARE, WHERE WE HOPE TO GO

Theatre New Mexico (formerly New Mexico Theatre Association) has been serving as an advocacy group for the arts since the 1970's. It is a member of Southwest Theatre Association and the American Association of Community Theatre, and through these groups, has participated in the AACT/FEST. (See "Handbook of AACT/FEST").

State winners of Theatre New Mexico have advanced as far as the international level; i.e. Los Alamos Little Theatre performed in Scotland in 1989. The state festival/conference is held in a different member location every year, thus allowing the diverse community theatre groups to "strut their stuff." Workshops have been as diverse as the groups themselves, calling on people from all facets of the arts. Examples include workshops on acting and auditioning conducted by two faculty members of the American Academy of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. (These gentlemen came all the way to Hobbs in 1987!) We've had workshops on everything from "Creating with Styrofoam" to "Who'll Sweep the Floor?" - dealing with community theatre management, with lots of other workshops in between.

In 1991, the just-elected executive board formed a committee to revamp/revise the by-laws to allow and encourage more participation by all types of membership through divisional delegates elected to the Board of Directors. These by-laws were adopted by the general membership at the 1992 conference and adopted by the general membership at the 1992 conference and divisional delegates were elected to the Board of Directors at the 1993 meeting. It is our goal to try to reinstate the American College ACT festival which has been inactive in this state, thus providing scholarship opportunities for students as well as recruiting opportunities for our state universities and colleges. We also voted to name Eastern New Mexico University Department of Theatre and Dance as the official archives/clearing-house for Theatre New Mexico, thus ensuring better, more efficient communication among the member groups.

The composition of the new Board of Directors is as diverse as the state itself. We have representatives from 7 different geographic locations as well as from educational, community theatre, and children's theatre groups. It is our hope and goal to use this diversity to reflect and enhance the theatrical arts in New Mexico.

Volunteering
Most Theatre Groups are local productions.

Each has it's appeal and most rely on community support.
To go beyond attending their shows and particpate in production you need to contact the theatre group in your area.
Every group or production always needs more people.

Use this site to find one, the local telephone book for your area or a community school.
If you find a group or your group NOT listed here please contact the webmaster  to add it to this site.
and tell them to send information about their shows, we'll publish it and provide links and email links to their information.

If the group desires and resources for a web site is scarce the Theatre-NM web site can be their primary source of information.
Links will be checked and if broken reasonable effort will be tried to find their current URL and fixed or removed as sites go away.

Promoting your Theatre
Promote your theater by supplying this website with images and information about your theater group. We'll set up a slide show for your images. Send us the largest ones you can, we can make them smaller, but it's tough to make little ones bigger.
Show us your actors and staff, with either their function, names or both.
Brag about your place, and if you don't want to support your own website, let TNM do it for you.
